The Loving Purple Light Book

Written by Denise C. Drake • Illustrated by Francesco Orazzini

The Loving Purple Light is a 32-page picture book based on a twenty minute classroom relaxation practice created by Denise C. Drake in Hawai'i. It provides a transformative journey of inner peace, love and connection for students.

This beautifully illustrated picture book is the heart of the LPL experience. The book guides readers through the relaxation process, helping them discover their own "loving purple light" within.

Denise C. Drake has her degree in Education with an emphasis on Child Psychology/Development. A long-time teacher on the Windward side of Oahu, Hawai'i, she has been a disciplined practitioner of a daily relaxation process for over 20 years. Recently, as a substitute teacher, she has brought this practice into the classroom. Her intention is to help children find peace in the love and light that is always there for them, by encouraging her students to relax and focus inwardly. She has been met with full support from teachers and children alike. "When I arrive in a classroom these days, I may be interacting with age groups from 4 years of age to 13, and I'm always greeted with, "Ms. D, will we be doing the Loving Purple Light today?”

Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

Q: How do I use "The Loving Purple Light" in the classroom?

A: Use this relaxation technique to recenter your class, especially effective after lunch or recess, when students are ready to relax and refocus.

Q: What's the best position for students to do the LPL practice?

A: The best position is whatever position each student feels most comfortable in. Allow your students to find their favorite positions (ie. lying down, sitting at a desk with heads down, etc.).

Q: What's the best way to facilitate the practice?

A: There are many options. You could read the book or listen to a pre-recorded reading on our website. A student may also be chosen to read the book which can foster connection.

Q: How do I use "The Loving Purple Light" at home?

A: Incorporate this practice into bedtime routines to help reconnect with loving and achieve a restful night's sleep. It's also beneficial for family refocusing when needed.

Q: Do I need special training to facilitate?

A: The self-guided program provides everything you need to start. In-person training offers deeper support.

Q: What if students are fidgety or don't seem engaged?

A: This is normal! Keep sessions short initially and gradually build up. Focus on creating a calm, non-judgmental space.

Timing & Duration

Q: How long does each session take?
A: Typically 10-20 minutes, but can be adapted to your time availability.

Q: How long should the relaxation technique last?
A: It depends on how quickly the class enters "the zone," that calm state where they move past any discomfort and focus inwardly. Once they're in that space, it creates a beautiful stillness in the room. Let your class remain in that state for as long as your schedule allows, as it's so nourishing for their well-being.

Q: How often should we practice LPL?

A: Many teachers use it daily, but even weekly practice shows benefits. Consistency matters more than frequency.

Age Groups & Customizations

Q: What age groups work best with LPL?
A: In schools, we find K-5 is very effective, but all ages use the LPL successfully.

Q: Can I customize the practice for my students?

A: Absolutely! We encourage you to customize the narrative of the Loving Purple Light to your needs. For example, when experiencing The Loving Purple Light, kindergarten students may feel that they want to send their love to their grandma, toys, teacher, etc. There are endless possibilities that can beautifully enhance the experience.
